History

Suncoast Center for Community Mental Health, Inc.'s history extends back to 1944 when the Child Guidance Clinic was formed. From that beginning, the organization has evolved into today's outpatient community mental health and social support services center, serving children and adults of all ages.

Many changes and advancements have occurred in the treatment of mental illness since 1944, but one thing has not changed - the mental health needs of our community. These needs continue to be the driving force of our organization, just as they have been for 60 years. We are a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization comprised of carefully-selected professionals who are dedicated to providing the highest quality care to meet individual and family needs. Services provided by Suncoast Center are client-centered and strength-based.

Suncoast Center in its present form was incorporated on June 3, 1981; however, services have been provided at the main office location since October 1944 under the name Child Guidance Clinic. The Child Guidance Clinic provided mental health and psychiatric services to children. In 1981, the agency split from Comprehensive Mental Health Services and became a non-profit agency, serving children, adults and seniors.

Mission
Suncoast Center's mission is to provide the most effective and efficient behavioral health and social support services to adults, children, and their families to facilitate the highest level of functioning of the individual in the family, on the job, and in the community.
